Shop Floor Metallurgy
XPRT 150 is an entry level course for shop floor personnel. The topics begin with environmental aspects of mining and refining the raw materials used in the production of metals. From there we move into alloying and the essential elements found in metals, an then to separation of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Much of the course is dedicated to understanding why certain types of metals are used for specific applications and how alloys improve/alter physical characteristics. Finally the course moves into heat treatments and other processes that are commonly used to alter the properties of metals.
In this class, the student will learn practical metallurgical concepts as they relate to machining , grinding, heat-treat and die/mold building. This class will help the student perform daily process improvements and identify problem areas as they relate to the material they are machining or otherwise working with.
